# Fundador de Pace Gallery critica a Met

Politicians and public figures are raising significant concerns regarding the Metropolitan Museum of Art's upcoming exhibition dedicated to John Galliano, a fashion designer with a controversial past. Among the critics is Arne Glimcher, founder of Pace Gallery—one of the world’s premier galleries—who has gone so far as to indicate potential consequences for the museum should the exhibition proceed.

A recent report in the *New York Times* revealed that the Met has faced considerable internal criticism over the exhibition featuring Galliano, who was found guilty of a hate crime in France in 2011 for making antisemitic remarks. After serving time and undergoing rehabilitation, he returned to the fashion industry as the creative director of Maison Margiela, a position he held until 2024.

The upcoming Galliano showcase is set to be a standout spring event for the Costume Institute next May. However, caution is warranted, as the opening coincides with Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day—a sensitive time for many. Critics have warned that the timing of the show could undermine the gravity of this observance.

The situation has led several prominent museum donors to consider retracting their financial commitments. Glimcher expressed his discontent directly to David Breslin, the Met's curator responsible for modern and contemporary art, highlighting the potential repercussions of the exhibition. In a telling email, he noted, “I don’t think you have considered the cost of this action and its reverberations to come.” He hinted at reevaluating future contributions, indicating a serious reconsideration of what works might be bequeathed to the museum.

Furthermore, Elisha Wiesel, daughter of the renowned writer Elie Wiesel, weighed in, calling the Galliano show a “pretty bad idea.” City Council Speaker Julie Menin criticized the exhibition as “a serious mistake” in correspondence with prominent figures at the Met, including director Max Hollein and Vogue’s Anna Wintour, who plays a critical role in shaping the Costume Institute’s narrative.

These vocal concerns have prompted some Met board members to reassess the exhibition further. Board member Andrew Solomon emphasized the importance of facing “cancel culture” head-on rather than yielding to it. Additionally, the Met has reportedly engaged representatives from Jewish communities to discuss the exhibition’s ramifications.

In a statement addressing the mounting concerns, Hollein reassured the public that the Met stands firmly against antisemitism, racism, and any form of prejudice. The institution is actively consulting with Jewish leaders and other stakeholders to navigate the complexities of this situation.

As discussions continue within the museum community, the implications of this exhibition stretch beyond art; they delve deeply into societal values, the impact of historical context, and the obligations of cultural institutions. The world will be watching closely as the Met navigates this contentious landscape.
