Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) recently addressed speculation regarding the opening of an office in India, labeling such reports as “entirely fake news.” A general partner at the firm, Anish Acharya, who has spent six years with a16z, publicly dismissed claims made by Indian media outlets that suggested the firm was preparing to establish a physical presence in Bengaluru and hire a local partner.
This denial comes at a time when a16z seems to be scaling back its international aspirations. Earlier in 2025, the firm made the decision to close its London office, which had only opened 18 months prior after significant efforts from the U.K. government to attract the prominent venture firm. Citing a shift in strategy, a16z indicated it would continue to manage investments internationally through remote teams and local networks, despite the closure.
Historically, a16z has not made substantial inroads into the Indian market, unlike other American venture capital firms such as Accel and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Their notable investment in India so far has been in the crypto exchange CoinSwitch, which was part of a $260 million funding round in 2021. Although there were plans to invest about $500 million in Indian startups, the firm has not made significant investments in the region since then.
The challenges of expanding into emerging markets were also highlighted by a16z’s co-founder, Marc Andreessen, during a past event, where he emphasized the complexity of building relationships essential for venture capital success. While the allure of investing in burgeoning markets remains strong, the intricacies involved present significant hurdles for firms navigating such landscapes.
As the firm continues to reassess its international strategy, its focus remains primarily on the U.S. market, suggesting a cautious approach to potential ventures in the Indian startup ecosystem. Information here reflects data available as of October 9, 2025, and does not account for developments that may have occurred since that date.
