Weeks before its anticipated acquisition by SpaceX is finalized, AI coding startup Cursor has initiated a significant expansion into India, launching its first localized subscription tailored to the needs of this burgeoning market. Recognizing India’s status as one of the largest developer landscapes globally, Cursor is positioning itself for robust growth by introducing a subscription plan specifically priced for Indian users.
The newly unveiled plan, named Cursor Start, offers a monthly subscription of ₹649 (approximately $7), significantly lower than the startup’s standard $20 monthly Pro subscription. This strategic pricing reflects the increasing significance of India in Cursor’s business model, as the country already ranks as its third-largest market, boasting the highest concentration of power users. Over the past year, Cursor’s user base in India has more than tripled, underlining this market’s potential.
Simon Green, the head of Asia-Pacific and Japan for Cursor, pointed to the deep pool of software engineering talent in India as a vital factor in this localization effort. Green remarked, “We felt that we had an opportunity there to right-size the commercial model and drive scale.” India’s impressive array of over 27 million developers, as reported by GitHub, places it second only to the U.S. regarding developer presence on its platform, with more than two million new developers joining in 2026 alone.
Cursor Start includes access to advanced AI tools like the Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, along with additional resources such as cloud agents, an iOS application, and various essential plugins. This plan targets developers seeking enhanced AI-assisted coding capabilities without the need for a full upgrade to the Pro subscription. While the new plan broadens accessibility, it does not replace the flagship offering and excludes access to advanced features and models provided by leading AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
The subscription is designed specifically for individual users in India, with multiple checks in place to prevent access through VPNs. This move aligns Cursor with other major players in the AI space, including OpenAI and Anthropic, who have also tailored their pricing strategies for the Indian market, as competition intensifies to capture users in this rapidly expanding sector.
Although Cursor Start launches initially in India, Green indicated that the company might consider expanding localized pricing to other regions if the approach proves successful. He stated the importance of fueling demand and supporting clients effectively, with an eye toward broader implementation down the line.
In addition to its pricing strategy, Cursor is also bolstering its operational presence in India. The startup has recruited its first sales representative in the country and plans to hire further leadership and technical support staff across major cities, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. Currently, individual developers and startups primarily drive adoption, but Cursor sees substantial opportunities in larger enterprises and sectors like banking.
Green emphasized that the India-specific pricing strategy aims for sustainability rather than serving as a loss leader. This method is feasible due to Cursor’s proprietary AI models, which incur lower operating costs than third-party options.
Cursor’s strategic expansion comes just over a month after SpaceX announced its intention to acquire the AI startup in a €60 billion all-stock transaction. As of now, the acquisition is expected to finalize in the third quarter. However, Cursor has been collaborating with SpaceX since April to develop next-generation AI tools for coding and knowledge work.
Until the acquisition is complete, Cursor will continue its operations independently, with its Indian expansion plans already in motion. Once the deal is finalized, SpaceX’s established presence in India, through its Starlink initiative, could facilitate Cursor’s growth by easing commercial barriers.
This information, while reflective of the status as of July 27, 2026, paints an informative picture of Cursor’s ambitions and the strategic shifts within the AI landscape in one of the world’s most vibrant tech markets.
