If Wi-Fi Can Go Through Walls, Why Is My Internet So Slow?

As you set up your home Wi-Fi, a common question arises: “Can Wi-Fi really travel through walls?” The simple answer is yes, but the nuances of how this works and its implications for your internet connection can be vital in addressing potential slowdowns at home.

According to expert Gianmarco Chumbe, a Laboratory Technical Project Manager, radio signals do indeed experience attenuation—a reduction in strength—as they pass through various materials such as brick, concrete, and metal. This attenuation intensifies with distance, affecting the quality of your connection. In fact, a recent survey highlighted that 42% of respondents experience unreliable internet services, underscoring the importance of understanding the factors at play.

Wi-Fi, or Wireless Fidelity, allows data exchange through radio waves and has been in existence since 1997 under the IEEE 802.11 standards. Modern advancements, particularly with Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and the latest Wi-Fi 7, are designed to enhance speed and connectivity. Despite these advancements, many households still encounter problems due to poor Wi-Fi signals that can lead to dead zones and slow connections, particularly in homes with thick or dense walls made of materials like cement and steel.

When considering how Wi-Fi penetrates walls, it’s essential to understand the science of electromagnetic waves. These waves can refract—bend around obstacles—which enables Wi-Fi signals to traverse most household barriers. However, not all forms of electromagnetic radiation possess this capability; for instance, Li-Fi, which uses visible light, cannot pass through walls as Wi-Fi does.

Even though Wi-Fi can traverse walls, thickness and construction materials can hinder signals significantly. Therefore, optimizing your wireless setup can be beneficial. A study conducted by CNET Labs found that the distance from the router plays a more critical role in signal strength than wall thickness alone.

To improve your Wi-Fi connection, there are several strategies to consider. First, it’s crucial to ensure that you are using the right router. For smaller homes, a traditional router may suffice, while larger residences could benefit from mesh systems. Regular upgrades, ideally every five years, may also be necessary.

Selecting the right Wi-Fi band is another key consideration. While 5GHz bands provide faster speeds, the 2.4GHz bands offer greater range, making them more suitable for larger spaces. Ensuring that your router is centrally located away from obstructions and electronic devices can also enhance signal strength.

If signal issues persist, adjusting router placement or investing in Wi-Fi extenders or mesh routers could provide solutions, effectively eliminating areas with poor connectivity and ensuring a robust home network. In certain cases, broader issues might stem from your internet service provider (ISP), which could be limiting your speeds.

In conclusion, while Wi-Fi technology enables signals to navigate through walls, users must proactively address factors that may impede their connection. By understanding the science behind Wi-Fi, making informed technological choices, and optimizing home setups, users can enjoy a more reliable internet experience.
