Grammy-winning composer Lebohang Morake, known as Lebo M, has initiated a legal battle against comedian Learnmore Jonasi over the translation of lyrics from the iconic song “Circle of Life” from Disney’s The Lion King. On February 25, during an episode of the One54 Africa podcast, Jonasi asserted that the chant in question translates to “Look, there’s a lion. However, Morake contends that the lyrics, “Nants’ingonyama bagithi Baba,” are in isiZulu and isiXhosa and should be understood as “All hail the king, we all bow in the presence of the king.” He argues that while “ingonyama” translates to “lion,” the specific context of the lyrics reflects a poetic form that conveys a deeper cultural significance.
The ensuing federal lawsuit, filed in California on March 16, claims that Jonasi has been performing this interpretation of the lyrics as a joke for the past eight years. After the clip of his explanation went viral, Morake alleged that Jonasi monetized the joke through various channels, pointing to what he deems “actual malice.” The lawsuit seeks $20 million in damages, alongside an additional $7 million for profits gained through the use of his work.
In a reaction to the lawsuit, Jonasi described the legal action as “unjust” and launched a GoFundMe campaign intending to cover his legal expenses. In his fundraising pitch, he expressed his frustration about the overwhelming legal fees required to defend his right to comedy. As of now, Jonasi’s campaign has raised over $16,000 of its $20,000 goal, reflecting considerable public support.
The tensions between the two escalated as they exchanged heated words on social media. Jonasi initially attempted to clarify that he only intended to joke, claiming he was a fan of Morake.
